| | My brother once commented that I sounded like a machine whenever I received ang pows(red packets) during Chinese New Years. It seems I'm programmed to say the words along the line of "gong hei fatt choy, san thai keen hong" when I get an ang pow. It sounds so fake. Oh well, haha.
My worldly treasures accumulated up to about RM200++ this year. Yeah, I know it's a paltry sum for those who earn big bucks. For a student like me, it's a small fortune.
Studying overseas(ahem, ahem, Sarawak is also over-the-sea you know) is not cheap you know. It involves more money when you're away from home. So having extra worldly treasures is a plus. By having the extra money in hand, it means I wouldn't have to visit the money printing machine for at least another 3 weeks or more. I have the habit of saving a few hundred bucks for the following semester. I'm only getting about RM300++ from the loans after all the deduction(as well as the dreaded bicycle-RM70/sem!). So saving is of course of utmost importance. I don't want to have maggi for breakfast, lunch and dinner by the end of the semester like some people do.
I stuffed all the money into a particular ang pow which was given by my dad(Konica Minolta). All the other empty ang pows were kept just in case I needed them. I then promptly placed it into my backpack at the front compartment. The thought of banking it into the back did come across my mind but I pooh-pooed it thinking that it would be better to keep it with me.
I already had some money in my wallet for the first few weeks so I didn't need to dig the ang pow for money. Only around the end of February did I start taking out some money. Every time it would around RM5-10 or less. I didn't want to take out huge sums to prevent overspending.
Just last week I headed to town but forgot to take some money from the ang pow to spend. Having only enough money for the bus fare, I headed to the money spitting machine to print some worldly treasures.
The money was enough for about a 2-3 days. After the 2-3 days which was yesterday, I searched my ang pow for some money. Feeling around the inside of my backpack, I felt that the ang pow felt thinner or in other words...empty!!! Oh my goodness! To my horror there was nothing inside the ang pow! It was clean! It simply vanished! It is simply...GONE! I had to summon all the coolness(mind the pun) in me to cool myself down.
I was sceptical so I searched again but true enough it was simply not there anymore! At that moment it felt like hailstones were falling down on me. I was simply petrified. I felt so, so angry and tears appeared round my eyes(well boys have emotions too).
All this 4 semesters I've never thought of being a victim but alas, I've been added to the numbers out there. I live a rather low-profile life here, I don't flaunt my money, I treat everybody well but I guess thieves will take none of that.
There are 2 possibilities how my worldly treasures simply vanished:
- The thief came into my room legitimately(some rooms have have the same key as mine, really dumb) and he knows me personally(how else would he know about the ang pow?).
- The thief struck while I was at the computer lab. We would have to leave our bags on a rack outside before going in.
Why only 2 possibilities?
- I bring my bag to class everyday and I only return to my room at 5pm normally.
- I rarely leave my bag around but if I did I would keep an eye on it.
- I would be in the room most of the time except for lunch, dinner or to get something from my friend.
So what did I do after realising my money were gone forever? Well, I reported it to my block head, the block warden and the university guard. Fully realising that it would be almost impossible to recover the worldly treasures, my report to the appropriate authorities was to just prevent another similar tragedy.
Oh wait, that's not the end of the story, there's also another twist to the story. A supernatural one.
The day before realising that my money were gone, I was doing some work on the PC in my room. The room light was switched off and only the table light illuminated the room. It was passed midnight when I heard some strange sound around my backpack which was placed about 5 meters away from where I was sitting.
I sounded like something was knocking or breaking something. So I went over to my backpack to check it out. It went dead silent after that. It was not a zip sound or anything like that so I wasn't too disturbed by it. An hour later, I got to bed and slept like any other day.
Only realising about the loss the next day did this thought of the strange sound come to mind. What if the sound was the reason for the loss? What if it was done by a......toyol? Oh, this is just any wild guess, it has indeed happened to a friend of mine. I'm not going into details though but there is a possibility but of course this could very well a human's deed after all. I know I sound like some nutcase but yeah, when you're grieving all kinds of wild imagination starts to pop-up, haha.
The other guy must be enjoying his hard earned income at the moment, sigh. May God deal with him so severely.
-Au revoir!-
